The Shire of Capel Trails Master Plan provides a strategic framework to enhance and expand a diverse, accessible, and sustainable trail network across one of Western Australia’s most ecologically significant regions. Connecting coastal settlements, rural landscapes, and the iconic Tuart Forest, the plan supports a wide range of users including walkers, cyclists, equestrians, and nature-based recreation enthusiasts.
Informed by extensive background research, on-ground audits, and community and stakeholder engagement, the Master Plan identifies key gaps in connectivity, maintenance, infrastructure, and promotion. Community feedback highlighted the need for better linkages between towns, beaches, and natural areas, alongside improved amenities such as parking, seating, and signage to enhance the overall trail experience.
The plan establishes a clear vision supported by strategic outcomes focused on integrated planning, quality and sustainability, network expansion, information and marketing, and community and economic development. It outlines a staged 10-year implementation approach to guide investment, prioritise projects, and support the growth of trail-based recreation and tourism.
Together, the Trails Master Plan provides a practical and evidence-based roadmap to strengthen connectivity, promote active lifestyles, and showcase the unique natural and cultural assets of the Shire of Capel.
