Alpine Shire Tracks and Trails Master Plan
Trails
The Tracks and Trails Master Plan provides a strategic framework to enhance and expand trail and outdoor recreation opportunities across the Shire. Set within a diverse natural landscape, the project aims to strengthen community connectedness, promote active lifestyles, and support nature-based tourism through the development of an integrated and accessible trail network.
The project involved comprehensive mapping of existing trails, including walking, hiking, cycling, mountain biking, gravel riding, and shared-use trails. This was supported by a detailed gap analysis informed by community consultation, site assessments, and desktop review, identifying key opportunities to improve connectivity, accessibility, and overall trail quality.
Recognising that trails traverse a mix of land tenures, including Shire-managed land, National Parks, and forestry areas, the Master Plan adopts a collaborative approach to planning and delivery. A key focus is on formalising informal connections and developing critical linkages to create a cohesive and well-connected network that links townships and key natural assets.
The Master Plan is supported by concept designs for priority projects and a prioritised Action Plan, providing a clear and actionable roadmap for future trail development, investment, and management. Together, this ensures the long-term sustainability and growth of the Shire’s trails network while enhancing community wellbeing and visitor experiences.
