The emergence of the 50-metre outdoor pool all over the nation can be partly attributed to the 1956 Summer Olympics where Australia dominated the medal standings. Iconic names such as Dawn Fraser and Murray Rose graced our screens with standout gold medal performances. Kids across the country aspired to be like these great names and outdoor pools were being installed at a great rate.

Fast forward 60 years and a lot of these pools are looking every year of their age. The question beckons for local government, what to do?

Is it feasible to renovate, rejuvenate or replace the outdoor pool? What would these changes look like? What does our community want or need?

In 2018 the options are exciting, pools are no longer just places to swim. A splash pad can be installed to cater for the family market, indoor courts and gyms can offset the cost of running the pool in a hub environment, a kiosk can expand into a Café, an indoor learn to swim operation can be added.

But remember, just like renovating your house if you don’t involve the experts you may find the whole house needs new wiring not just the installation of a few additional PowerPoints.

Have a calculated plan and speak with Neil Tredwell a specialist in aquatic feasibility studies.
