Matt Horder’s story of resilience, leadership and hope.
At Tredwell, we have the privilege of working with many passionate and dedicated professionals who contribute to the sport and recreation sector across Australia. One such person is Matt Horder, a valued friend and respected leader who has made a significant contribution through his work within the Queensland sport and recreation sector. We first met Matt in Warwick, Queensland, as young professionals starting our careers in the industry. Like many twenty somethings, we were ambitious and determined to succeed. Those early years were filled with professional growth and more than a few memorable moments in Matt’s trusty Holden Jackaroo.
Many people may know Matt as a respected community leader, project manager and advocate who has dedicated much of his professional life to delivering outcomes that benefit communities across Queensland. Others know him through his longstanding involvement with surf lifesaving, community organisations and public service. What fewer people may appreciate is the extraordinary personal journey.
In his recently released memoir, The Day the Sky Fell: A Family Forever Changed by MH17, Matt shares the deeply personal story of losing both of his parents, Howard and Susan Horder, aboard Malaysia Airlines Flight MH17 when it was shot down over eastern Ukraine in July 2014. The tragedy claimed the lives of all 298 passengers and crew and forever changed the lives of families across the world.
What makes Matt’s story so compelling is not simply the tragedy itself, but the grace, dignity and resilience with which he and his family have navigated the years that followed. The book provides an honest account of grief, the pursuit of justice and the challenges of rebuilding life after unimaginable loss. Through his reflections, readers gain insight into the strength of family, the importance of community support and the enduring impact that loved ones leave behind.
Beyond being a memoir, The Day the Sky Fell is a powerful reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of resilience, compassion and human connection. It is a story that transcends the events of MH17 and speaks to anyone who has experienced loss, adversity or significant life challenges. Through sharing his experience, Matt has created something that not only honours the memory of his parents but also offers hope and perspective to others facing difficult circumstances.
We encourage people to support Matt and read this remarkable story. The Day the Sky Fell is available for purchase via Matthew Horder’s website www.matthewhorder.com.au
