The Culture of Sport

Sport is often referred to as Australia’s favourite past time and most of us have pulled on a pair of sneakers at some time in our life to participate. The reason we partake in sport varies hugely but commonly the notion of fitness, friendship & mastery drive us in the direction of sport. Traits such as resilience, persistence and goal setting are developed over time because of sporting circumstances.  Resilience training is evident when I watch my 14-year-old son play cricket and face his first ball of the game only to see the tumbling of wickets because of a perfect ball. He must grapple with the emotions of getting out, stroll off the field in a respectful manner, say a couple of supportive words to the incoming batter and then take off all his gear without throwing it into his bag in disgust.  This is a tough ask for a young lad. Each sport has its own learnings, its own personality.

Considering recent controversies at the elite level it is a timely reminder to focus on some of sports non-negotiables. A good culture in sport involves three of my most simple rules:

  • Play fair & be honest
  • Respect team mates, opposition, officials & spectators
  • Have fun and relish the time spent playing

Be the best version of yourself on and off the sporting arena, you know the rules!
